Sam Poolman Brings Together Community in Support of Bushfire Relief

It’s been two years since Sam Poolman launched Aspire Netball, a development pathway for young netballers in her home region. Through her programs she’s met dedicated individuals and even stronger teams that work to empower girls and women.

So, when she heard that the Confident Girls Foundation was raising funds to support netball communities impacted by the Bushfires, her first thought was about how her region could collectively come together.

And they didn’t disappoint. From Woy Woy to Taree to Tamworth, the Hunter Region brought 22 associations together for a 11’s Development with 270 athletes, 27 development umpires and 33 development coaches and a further 18 coaches involved on the day. The incredible amount of $11,467 was raised from the day.

All Associations players, coaches and umpires donated a small registration fee, with other donations made from a raffle and food vans. The official opening heard inspiring speeches from the Lord Mayor and Netball Australia Board Member Wendy Archer.

The 11s Development day was carefully planned to allow the development of players, coaches and umpires through training components, workshops, mentoring and match play. An insite to what Aspire Netball provides through it’s programs.

“For me these programs are so important, I remember my parents driving me 4-5 times a week to Sydney just to receive the training required to progress my game. Not everyone has the parents who can commit to that both financially and with time.”

“It’s is an opportunity for our region to collectively work together to raise funds for those affect by the Bushfires. It’s a way for me to give back to all those who have given to me, and to netball.”

“When I was a aspiring netballer Liz Ellis who l looked up to gave me the opportunity to coach through her clinics. Through opportunities like these have impacted the person and player l am today and l am proud that Aspire is now providing that to aspiring netballer’s in my home region.”

“With our 11s Development Day innovative the part l was most proud of is the relationships that are built. Over the last two years what l have given to our Region is now returning the support by being apart of our innatovie and showing other netball associaitons and clubs that we are a region that cares and comes together through our sport.”
