NGUKURR’s SCHOOLS TRIP TO MELBOURNE

An eight-hour drive from Darwin, on the banks of the Roper River in southern Arnhern Land is Ngukurr; a remote Aboriginal community.

With school attendance being an issue in the local area, as children often not prioritising their education. Georgia Croad, the transition teacher at Ngukurr School, came up with the idea to bring the students to Melbourne, on the condition that they regularly turned up to school and netball training.

“It was a way to get the students to work hard towards something, show dedication, take ownership of the trip and understand the consequences of their attendance,” said Georgia.

After a year of working towards their goals, a group of ten indigenous girls aged between eight and 12, many of whom had never been on a plane before, made the big trip to Melbourne.

“The confidence and teamwork they gained through the tournament was amazing. They learnt about winning and losing. It made them determined to improve.”

“The girls were fantastic. They loved the trip. They were really engaged and open to trying new things. The trip is something the girls are not going to stop talking about any time soon. It’s made them determined to get back on the court and encourage others in the community to join them.”
