OUR STORY

 

Our History

In March 2015 Netball Australia realised that their platform, as Australia #1 sport for females, gave them the perfect opportunity to directly impact the well-being of girls across the country.

It was decided that the Netball Foundation would be formed to enhance the political, economic, educational, physical and emotional well-being of women and girls.

Skip ahead two years and the Netball Foundation had grown exponentially. So, in 2017 it was decided to separate the Netball Foundation from Netball Australia, thus creating the Confident Girls Foundation.

Our Present

Currently, the Foundation operates as a national ACNC approved Not-for-Profit. We partner with grassroots service providers to support girls and their communities in times of adversity.

Since our beginning we have aimed to highlight and address the key drivers of gender bias including, financial barriers, lack of leadership opportunities, isolation, gender stereotypes and barriers to physical activity.

Through our programs we focus on three key areas of impact, the physical, emotional and social wellbeing of girls. So, whilst netball is at the heart of how we’re supporting women and girls, it isn’t the point of what we do.

The Situation

Girls encounter major obstacles and discrimination in their lives, and they experience them early.

Girls are more likely to experience domestic violence, less likely to play sport and 83% don't feel like they've been given the same opportunities as boys (2016 Everyday sexism report).

Global development efforts have largely failed to reach the 250 million adolescent girls worldwide, especially the girls living in remote, hard to reach places.

That's where we step in.

The Solution

Investing in girls is key to reducing poverty. It is key to reducing teenage pregnancy. It is key to driving social and economic change.

We are working towards a world where all girls can go to school, see a doctor and stay away from violence. We're working towards equality.

There isn't a simple answer to these problems but we think starting with how girls see themselves and how they fit into their communities, is a great place to start.
